If you’re a soccer parent like me, you’ve probably asked yourself,
Why does my kid’s training program start with something as simple as thigh juggling instead of just jumping into foot juggling?”
It’s a great question, and today, I’m breaking it all down for you.
As a dad to two soccer-loving boys, I’ve seen firsthand how small, intentional steps can lead to big breakthroughs. One moment in particular stands out: the day Adam, my oldest son, hit 1,000 consecutive juggles. Watching his face light up in triumph and pure joy was one of those moments that make all the sweat, effort, and time invested feel absolutely worth it.
But let’s rewind a bit because this didn’t happen overnight. Adam’s juggling journey started just like everyone else’s—with a few frustrating drops, a lot of laughs, and, most importantly, learning the basics: thigh juggling.
Why We Start with the Thigh
When we think of juggling, we often picture smooth footwork, perfect rhythm, and effortless control. But for beginners, that’s miles down the road. Thigh juggling is the perfect first step, and here’s why:
1. Larger Surface Area = Easier to Control
The thigh is a bigger, more forgiving surface than the foot, making it easier for kids to develop coordination and rhythm without getting discouraged.
2. Confidence is Key
When kids see they can control the ball with their thigh—even if it’s just a few reps—it builds their confidence and keeps them motivated to keep going.
3. Reduces Frustration (For Kids and Parents!)
Trust me, I’ve been there. Nothing derails a session faster than mounting frustration—for your child and for you. Starting with the thigh gives kids an early win, which makes the process smoother for everyone.
4. Teaches Movement and Balance
When juggling with the thigh, kids have to stay light on their feet and move rhythmically to keep the ball under control. This skill carries over to all aspects of their game.
5. A Gateway to Full-Body Control
Thigh juggling introduces kids to using their whole body for ball control. This lays the groundwork for more advanced skills like chest control, headers, and even handling unpredictable bounces in games.
6. Desensitization to the Ball
In the beginning, some kids might say the ball hitting their thigh stings a bit or feels weird. Thigh juggling helps them get used to this sensation, making them more comfortable and confident.
Adam’s Journey to 1,000 Juggles
When Adam first started juggling, he could barely get past three touches without the ball flying off in some random direction. But I set up a small perimeter with cones and encouraged him to keep going. Slowly but surely, he improved.
Then came the day we set a stretch goal: 1,000 juggles. I could see the determination in his eyes. Every drop of the ball meant starting over, but he didn’t give up. I watched him work through frustration, reset his focus, and push himself in ways I’d never seen before.

Finally, after weeks of practice, it happened. Adam hit 1,000 juggles. He didn’t just meet his goal—he crushed it. The joy on his face was priceless. He was so proud of himself, and I was, too. It was a moment neither of us will ever forget, and it reminded me why I started helping him train in the first place.
Why Juggling Matters
You might wonder, “Is juggling really that important?” The short answer is yes. Here’s why:
- First Touch: Juggling builds ball control, which is the foundation for a great first touch—critical in tight game situations.
- Coordination and Rhythm: Juggling develops body awareness, balance, and rhythm, all of which are essential for confident play.
- Focus and Discipline: Reaching juggling milestones requires concentration and perseverance, teaching life skills that go beyond the field.
- Creativity: Once kids become confident jugglers, they’re more likely to experiment with tricks and creative moves, adding flair to their game.
