As a parent, you’ve probably felt caught between two extremes when it comes to your child’s soccer development. On one side, there’s the pressure to push hard—avoid being “soft,” and fall into the whole Tiger Mom mentality. On the other, there’s this fear of being judged for simply trying to help your child improve, or even worrying that you’re overstepping your role as just their parent.
I totally get it. When I started training my two sons, Adam and Matthew, I wrestled with these same questions. How could I help them get better without making the game feel like work? How could I push them to improve while keeping things fun and not burning them out?
Through a lot of trial and error, I discovered a few key things that made a real difference—things that you don’t hear talked about much in mainstream soccer communities. That’s exactly why I decided to start The Parent Trainer’s Podcast over four years ago. I wanted to create a space where parents like you—parents who are actively involved in their kids’ training—could find real, practical advice and avoid the same mistakes I made.
Here’s a personal story that really pushed me to create this podcast. One day, I was working with Adam at the park—just him, me, a few cones, and a ball. We were running through a drill, and Adam got frustrated because he couldn’t quite get it right. He started to get upset, and admittedly, I got frustrated too. I was trying to keep the drill on track while not losing my cool, but it wasn’t easy with the tension building.
But then, I noticed another parent nearby, watching us. They were glaring at us, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was being judged.
Was I pushing too hard? Was I overstepping my role as just a dad? It was a moment where I started second-guessing myself.
And then, there’s the advice that many parents hear: “Just outsource all the training to a coach or private trainer.” But here’s the thing—doing that isn’t always practical or affordable, and it doesn’t provide the quality of practice your child really needs. It’s expensive, and frankly, it’s not always the solution. As a parent, your involvement in their development is crucial. It’s about the consistency and connection you can offer at home that really makes a difference, not just handing it off to someone else.
But here’s the thing—over time, I started connecting with other parents who were facing the same challenges. Together, we created a community where there was no judgment, just support and shared experiences. That’s when I realized I wasn’t alone, and that’s when The Parent Trainer’s Podcast was born.
Each week, I dive into stories, tips, and insights that have worked for me and my family. I share what I’ve learned along the way and also highlight resources from other experts to help you feel confident and informed in your journey as a parent trainer.
It’s not just about drills and skills; it’s about finding the right balance between improving your child’s game and keeping things fun.
By subscribing to the podcast and weekly newsletter, you’ll get both archived and new episodes, plus helpful resources I find along the way. Let’s cut through the noise and build an environment where our kids can grow—on and off the field.
I’m excited to have you along for the ride!
