ESPN announced today that Jose Mourinho has made a surprise return to football after being announced as the new AS Roma manager for next season, signing a three-year contract.

 

Mourinho was sacked as Tottenham manager on April 19 but has made a quick return, the Serie A club confirmed on Tuesday.

Mourinho has had success in Italy.  It will be the Portuguese manager’s second spell in Serie A after he spent two seasons with Inter Milan before leaving to join Real Madrid in 2010.

 

There was a lot of talk about the need for Jose Mourinho to retire due to his style of football being outdated. Roma –  a club reeling from an embarrassing defeat in the Europa league was eager to find a new manager.

 

While this is shocking, given Mourinho’s success in Italy and Roma’s desperate need for a high-profile manager – this partnership could work. Time will certainly tell. What we do know is that we can expect some more great press conferences from the self-proclaimed “Chosen One”.
